Catholic Funeral Mass

The Catholic Funeral Mass is the final step in helping your loved one begin their journey into eternity.  None of us knows the state of a soul at death but as Catholics we believe  in heaven and pray we will one day be reunited with our loved ones in a heavenly paradise.

The church allows a funeral Mass with the body or cremains.  The cremains must be intact (meaning no part of them can be separated from the whole).  Once the funeral Mass is completed the body or cremains must be interned as soon as possible in a proper cemetery.

To arrange a Funeral Mass
at St. Mary, Our Lady of the Annunciation

Upon the death of a loved one contact the parish office at 734 379 9248.  The parish will work with you to the extent possible to select the day that works for your family.  We can not have funerals on Sunday's or other holy days.  Also, while funerals in general take precedence over most events,  there are occasions when the priest is not available on a specific date.

Prior to the Mass a time for viewing and visitation is allowed in the gathering space adjacent to the church.  This is generally 30 minutes immediately preceding the Mass.

A funeral Mass is like a Sunday Mass with an old testament, new testament, Psalm and Gospel.  There is then a homily, Eucharistic prayers, communion and the final committal.  The songs also follow the pattern of a Sunday liturgy.  The parish will provide the lector, acolyte and organist for your service.   Eulogies are not allowed during the Mass.

Burying the dead is a corporal work of mercy and is our duty and privilege to assist those we love when they can no longer help themselves.  As such there are no fees for a funeral Mass at St. Mary.
